Service Projects

"Do a Good Turn Daily"

Service is an important part of Scouting and Troop 505 is no exception. Troop 505 believes in helping others through Service Projects.

Our Scouts strive to do a good turn daily. This is the slogan of the Boy Scouts. Some Good Turns are big - helping out after floods or other disasters, recycling community trash or working on conservation projects. But Good Turns are often small, thoughtful acts - helping a child cross a busy street, going to the store for an elderly neighbor, cutting back brush that is blocking a sign, doing something special for a brother or sister or welcoming a new student to your school.

In Scouting in addition to the daily good turn the Scouts organize Service Projects to give back to the common unity. The Boy Scouts of America are a 20th-century phenomenon and a powerful civic force. More than a million Boy Scouts and half a million adult volunteers contribute 50 million service hours a year.

Service for Second Class, Star, and Life rank candidates, as described in the Boy Scout Handbook, can take many forms... It can be for one's church, school, community, council summer camp, local hospital, blood bank, retirement home, or local soup kitchen.

Scouts that want to work on service projects that are completed on their own and not as part of a Troop or Eagle project are required to have the approval from either the Scoutmaster, the Troop Committee Chairman or the Advancement Committee Chairman before beginning their work. Please use the provided Troop Service Hour form to obtain approvals and document your hours.

Service to our Chartered Organization

Troop 505 is fortunate to have a terrific Chartered Organization, Knox Presbyterian Church. Annually we try to give back to our Chartered Organization by doing service projects for them.

Eagle Projects

Troop 505 seems to always have at least one Scout working on his Eagle. As part of the requirements for earning this rank, the Scout organizes a significant service project. The Scout usually includes the entire troop in the project by recruiting and managing volunteers. Our Scouts then have the opportunity to participate in many varied service projects.

Our Scouts have built playgrounds and campsite equipment, painted buildings, created conservations areas and many, many other things while helping Scouts earn their way to Eagle. Participating in Eagle Scout projects is a way for our Scouts to give back to their community and also to support a fellow Scout.
